ancient cypriot history when on holiday at Villa Serendipity
There is over 8000 years of history in Cyprus, much of it concentrated around the region of Paphos as this was the ancient Roman capital of the island. There are many archaeological sites and some of the finest mosaics in the world to visit. Close by is the Roman amphitheatre which is still used today for concerts and ancient Greek drama productions.

The Akamas Peninsular has a long Hellenistic history dating back to 3000 years ago. The ruins of 'Pyrgos tis Reginas' (The tower of the queen) are located in a magnificent glade with a giant oak tree and a gentle spring. According to an ancient legend the area was the shelter where Aphrodite, the goddess of love, rested after she had taken her bath.

The Akamas Peninsular is located to the North West of Paphos and is a vast expanse of wilderness with remarkably diverse features in wildlife, fauna and flora, geology, beautiful landscapes and has a rich historical and cultural heritage. This is a protected area rich in wild life and animals that you wont see anywhere else on the island. It has been declared a national park so that any modern development is prohibited. The Akamas peninsular remains unaltered and you will find it the same as it has been for centuries. Only recently organised safaris with qualified guides can take you deep inside the Akamas for a few hours of unforgettable experiences. This beautiful environment was chosen by Aphrodite as a meeting place with her lover Adonis!

You can explore the Avakas gorge which is a breathtaking and challenging experience. Its sharp cut cliffs and wild scenery are breathtaking. You can visit Lara bay (turtle bay) which is the last remaining breeding ground of the green turtles in the Mediterranean. Here the turtles have a safe place to lay their eggs. Lara bay and Fontana Amorosa bay are unique sandy beaches of beauty and tranquillity.

There are 3 nature trails in the Akamas. Aphrodite trail starts from the baths of Aphrodite to the tower of origena and back along the coast. Adonis trail starts again from the baths of Aphrodite to the tower of Regina and back to the main Polis road. The final Smigies trail starts from the Smigies picnic site 2km west from Neo Chorio and ends up back at the same point. The walking distance varies from 2 -4 hours and there are wooden signs to guide walkers along these trails.

scuba diving when on holiday at Villa Serendipity
Most dive sites are only a few minutes boat journey and there are a number of shore dives available. Diving is most popular around Ayia-Napa and Paphos. Whilst Larnaca attracts attention due to the wreck of the Zenobia being located there. The Zenobia is one of the best wreck dives in the world and is a real treat for the experienced diver. A Swedish Row-row ferry of a 172m, it sank in 1980 and lies on her port side with 108 articulated lorries intact on the lorry deck. For more pristine dive sites it is necessary to travel to the Northwest of Paphos around the Akamas peninsular. Often there are artefacts such as roman pottery on the sea bed, but be aware that the removal of these items is strictly forbidden.

The water temperature is 18c (64f) in January to 27c (81f) in July. A dry suit may be be necessary during the winter months of November through to March and in July and August a 3mm wetsuit is generally enough. For the rest of the year a 5mm wetsuit or a semi dry should be adequate.

Visibility is 10-40m (30-130ft). Dives include wrecks, caves and ancient settlements. Marine life is plentiful with tuna, barracuda, octopus, moray eels, wrasse, grouper, jacks, rays, parrot fish, sea urchins and star fish. You can dive in Cyprus at any time of the year although if you want the water to be warm enough to wear a thin wet suit choose the summer months. The climate is at its best during May-October.
